250 Years of America - 2026-- -America At 250-- Two hundred fifty years after the Declaration of Independence, the United States continues to reflect on its past while looking ahead. From a small group of colonies along the Atlantic coast, the nation has grown into a diverse and complex country shaped by conflict, innovation, hardship and progress. The principles outlined in 1776—liberty, equality and self-government—have been tested time and again. At different moments in history, Americans have worked to expand those ideals and apply them more fully. The story of the United States is not a straight line. It includes both triumph and challenge. But through it all, the nation has continued to evolve. At 250 years, the focus is not only on where the country has been, but where it is going next. In communities large and small, including here at home, the American story continues to be written. DID YOU KNOW? The United States will celebrate its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. THIS WEEK 250 YEARS AGO July 4, 1776 — The Declaration of Independence was adopted. MONTANA CONNECTION Montana was still about 113 years from becoming a state. Montana officially became the 41st state on November 8, 1889. Statehood marked the culmination of decades of settlement, mining booms, cattle ranching, and railroad expansion that transformed the territory from a remote frontier into a growing part of the nation. Montana’s next major milestone anniversary will be its 150th birthday (Sesquicentennial) on November 8, 2039.
