The business is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. — Leader Photos, mike The late Bernie Maher started his own auto body business in Scobey in 1982 called Bernie’s Glass & Body Shop and today his son, Robbie Maher (pictured in middle), owns and operates it at the corner of Highway 5 and Timmons Street in Scobey, one block east of Main Street. Today it goes by the name Bernie’s Body Shop, Inc. Open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Bernie’s Body Shop offers many services. Maher, who earned a degree in auto body and refinishing from Montana State University-Billings Vocational Technology, is I-CAR and ASE certified. All his paint jobs are PPG certified, which comes with a lifetime warranty. The business is now using a new water-based paint called Envirobase High Performance, which: provides a choice of A-Chromatic surfacers and sealers for better hiding; anti-settle toners for accurate color consistency; high solids waterborne basecoat; superb metallic control; easy blending; three clearcoat options with one visit application. The business also does exhaust work. “I can get all types of dual exhaust,” Maher said. In addition He has three children: Whitley, Hadley, and Brecken, the last of the bunch is less than a month before graduating. One of the newer products available at Bernie’s is the refrigerant for automotive air conditioning purposes called R-1234yf. Bernie’s Body Shop offers many auto accessories, including HERD grill guards for pickups and semis, bug deflectors, stainless steel, rollup bed covers, running boards, glass installation and windshield/glass replacement. The business also has recalibrating equipment to get all ADAS cameras and sensor back to OEM specs. Maher is also in the towing/wrecker business, which Bernie started in 1979. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling Bernie’s Body Shop, Inc. at 406-487-2262 or Maher’s cell phone at 406-783-7592. “Anything from a long-haul to getting you out of a river or lake,” he said. Maher is also the local Triple AAA contractor, with the next closest being in Glasgow and Williston. “We will work with any insurance company to get one’s vehicle repaired and back the way it was,” said Maher. He explains a new aspect of the business: “Aluminum body parts are more common now. Keeping up with this and the newer Fords, which in 2017 started all panels being aluminum, we have all the Ford-approved tools to repair it back to factory specs and look.” Maher has two full-time employees and two part-time employees working with the business. Jace Dahl (pictured left), who graduated from Scobey High School in 2010, started working part-time at Bernie’s Body Shop, Inc. in 2007 and eventually became full-time. Russell Hochstrat (pictured right), who lives in Flaxville, has been working at Bernie’s Body Shop, Inc. since mid-2010.
