The owner of every dog or cat kept, harbored or maintained within the city shall license such a dog or cat with in 30 days after such dog or cat becomes five months old, or within 30 days in the case of a dog or cat five months or older, newly brought into the city. No license shall be issued unless the applicant therefore produces satisfactory proof that such dog or cat has been vaccinated with a rabies vaccine currently effective. 2. The main reason is to prove your dog has been vaccinated for rabies. A. Then you protect your dog with a rabies vaccine, you also protect our community. B. There is no cure for rabies in animals and the disease is always fatal. In humans, rabies is almost always fatal once signs of the disease develop. People bitten or scratched by ANY ANIMAL of unknown rabies or vaccination status should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical assistance. C. If your dog or cat goes missing, having them licensed drastically improves your chances of getting them back. Your pet is probably scared and lonely and misses you as much as you miss your pet. A. More often than not, licensing your dog helps get it home when it is lost or out wandering the town. We can search by description (color), sex, breed... and at least call all those with a dog similarly matching that description to see if it is their dog.
