Week three action had the Wolves winning at Fairview 46-43 and losing 56-42 to the Scotties in Glasgow. The Spartans, due to icy roads preventing them from competing in the Shelby Tournament, have played only two games, which are victories over Plentywood (62-23) and at Frazer (95-31). In the girls matchup, the Wolves (1-5, 237-337, 39.5-56.1) have only defeated St. Labre 5546 in the Lookwood Tournament. Their losses were to, in order played: Hays-Lodgepole 52-47, Lame Deer 61-59, Huntley Project 64-24, Fairview 50-30 and Glasgow 64-22. The Scobey girls (2-0, 126-27, 63.0-13.5) have defeated Plentywood 52-15 and Frazer 74-12. On Saturday, January 3, it’s the Lustre Christian Lions visiting Poplar’s Moccasin Square Garden in non-conference play. The Lustre girls (3-2, 219-192, 43.8-38.4) won both games at the Glasgow Tournament, stopping Terry 50-39 and Plevna 73-34, before losing 50-24 at Three Forks. The next week in Churchill the Lady Lions edged Manhattan Christian 38-34. Their final game of 2025 was a tight 35-34 loss to Froid-Lake in Froid. The Lustre boys (5-0, 360-153, 72.0-30.6) have pounded all five opponents: 60-19 over Terry and 78-26 over Plevna, both in Glasgow; 62-44 at Three Forks; 76-45 over Manhattan in Churchill; 84-19 over Froid-Lake in Froid. The Poplar girls (3-2, 254-265, 50.8-53.0) in Great Falls defeated the Browning JV 49-29 and lost 46-42 to St. Ignatius. At the Lockwood tourney they defeated Lame Deer and Lodge Grass 56-49. Glasgow stopped them 8852 and they edged Harlem 55-53. More on those streakers: Last issue we wrote about the two-time defending Class C boys state champion Box Elder Bears losing 57-44 to Lame Deer at the 33rd annual Native American Classic Basketball Tournament in Great Falls. It ended the Bears’ winning streak at 52 games, which was five wins shy of tying and six of overtaking the Montana High School Association’s consecutive victory streak owned by the Scobey Spartans (2019-21), still standing at 57. That said, we thought it would be a good time to re-run the list of all those great boys’ winning streaks occuring over the past 64 years: Scobey Spartans, 57 consecutive victories, 2019-21, coached by Jason Wolfe, SHS Class of 1997; Missoula Sentinel Spartans, 56, 196265; Choteau Bulldogs, 54, 2014-16; Malta Mustangs, 50, 1970-72; Cut Bank Wolves, 49, 2002-04; Arlee Warriors, 49, 2016-19; Gardiner Bruins, 43, 1988-90; Loyola Sacred Heart Rams (Missoula), 42, 2022-24; Fairview Warriors, 40, 2011-13; Beaverhead County (Dillon) Beavers, 37, 2015-17; Gardiner Bruins, 36, 2004-05; Manhattan Christian Eagles, 34, 2021-22; Malta Mustangs, 31, 1969-70; Laurel Locomotives, 30, 1978-80; Seeley-Swan Blackhawks, 29, 1967-68. While we are on the subject: Here is the Montana High School Association list of the most consecutive victories for girls’ basketball teams: Fairfield Eagles, 120, 2010-15; North Country Mavericks, 73, 2022-25; Great Falls High Bison, 72, 1980-83; Richey Royals, 69, 1999-2002 (coached by Clarence “Butch” Zieske, SHS Class of 1969); Malta M-Ettes, 54, 2014-16; Reed Point Renegades, 54, 2004-06; Three Forks Wolves, 51, 1977-80; Billings Central Rams, 47, 1986-88; Winifred Red Raiders, 42, 1994-96; Fromberg Falcons, 39, 1985-86. FYI: If one thinks the Fairfield girls’ winning streak is the longest in the nation for girls, think again. That distinction belongs to the gals of Passaic High School in Passaic, New Jersey, Pads which strung together 159 consecutive victories from 1919-1925. Between 1915 and 1924 these young ladies posted an overall record of 200-1 (.995). Georgia Christian of Valdosta, Georgia won 129 straight games.
