Sports S tuff Sponsored by LPL Financial BASKETBALL — The lists: It is a great time to publish the career-coaching wins of the Montana High School Association (MHSA) girls’ and boys’ head coaches who are on the all-time top 10 list for coaching wins, and it is a proud moment to say two of them are graduates of Scobey High School. According to the current MHSA coaching wins for girls’ basketball looks like this: Brett Thompson, 466, Charlo; Bob Vogel, 443, Fromberg and Edgar; Cary Veis (SHS ‘72), 433, Custer County District High School (Miles City); Bill Triplett, 408, Reed Point; Delmar Fried, 382, Brady/Malta; Clayton Horning, 364, Baker; Steve Keller, 334, Opheim/Helena High; Nate Hammond, 319, Bigfork/Malta; Larry Schmautz, Columbia Falls; Mike Bradshaw, 292, Drummond. Honorable mention to Roy Lackner of the Big Sandy Pioneers who currently sits in 11th with 289 victories. For the MHSA boys’ list, sitting pretty in the top spot is Dean Gamradt of Dutton/Brady and Fairfield at 717 (this record might not ever be broken since the gap is so huge... but who really knows); Kim L. Haines, 670, Seeley-Swan, Wolf Point, Conrad and Drummond; Don Peterson, 546, Laurel/Bigfork; Robert Lowry, 472, Wolf Point, John Cheek, Sr, 469, Anaconda; David Costin, 457, Malta and Saco; Gordon Real Bird, 439, Lodge Grass; Ron Marshall, 439, Roberts; Brian Kavanagh, 386, Cut Bank; Jason Wolfe (SHS ‘97), 381, Scobey (still active and no sign of slowing down!); honorable mention to Eric Hays, 361, Missoula Hellgate, and Doug Robinson, 355, Billings West. FOOTBALL — In Butte, not Great Falls: The Leader told its readers last week that Cooper Axtman (SHS ‘26) has been selected to play in the 79th annual Montana East-West Shrine Game, scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026. It was printed the game would be held in Great Falls at its usual home of Memorial Stadium but that was incorrect. Every now and then the Montana East-West Shrine Game is held in Butte, America, which will be the case in 2026, not Great Falls as reported in the December 4, 2025 issue of the Leader. So start making your plans to go watch Axtman in action, along with Jace Pardee of the Carter County (Ekalaka) Bulldogs, the other East C Division 8-man player picked for the prestigious contest. The game will air live on Scobey radio station KCGM 95.7 FM and on the Montana Television Network. About the East-West Shrine Game: The Montana East-West Shrine Game is the premier all-star football game in Big Sky Country and has a long history of distinguished players and coaches. It is also one of the oldest high school all-star football games in United States of America. Every year since 1947, Montana high schools’ finest players are selected to compete in a game to raise money and to help make the public aware of the expert orthopedic and burn care available at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Spokane, Washington. Expert care is provided regardless of the family’s ability to pay. In recent years, the Montana game is the top high school Shrine Game in the nation for hospital donations. In the last 10 years this game has raised over $1,500,000. Forty of Montana’s finest are selected to compete on each team and two players from Canada will join them, one for the East team and one for the West team. The game also features cheerleaders from throughout the state who have met a high standard of excellence at their respective schools. The players and cheerleaders are nominated by their schools and coaches across the state, and finally selected as the “best of the best” to participate in the 79th Montana Shrine Game. They join an elite fraternity of players and cheerleaders, many of whom have gone on to distinguished collegiate and professional careers. He signed on the line: Thirty-nine-year-old starting quarterback Trevor Harris of the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders signed a one-year contract extention on Thursday, December 4. He led the Riders to the Grey Cup championship last month by throwing for 302 yards and a Grey Cup-record 85.2% completion rate in a 25-17 victory against the Montreal Alouettes. Harris also passed for 305 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-24 win over Winnipeg in the West Division Final, including a late-game-winning drive. He enters the 2026 season ranked 13th all-time in CFL passing yards with 37,697. If one lives along the U.S. side of the Canadian border but never been to a CFL game in Regina, it is time to go and enjoy a game live at Mosaic Stadium. Brought to you by: Ï1 LPL Financial Gary L.
