Thievin, who attended Scobey Schools until eighth grade, graduated from Rosebud (Mont.) High School in 1984. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman for two years studying mechanical engineering technology and then two years at North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, earning a degree in auto collision repair. He worked in the Fargo, North Dakota/Moorhead, Minnesota area for seven years doing auto body work.
