Scobey Blues Baseball Reunion Scobey, Montana | June 27-29, 2025 In conjunction with the Scobey High School All-Class Reunion, the Scobey Blues and friends are getting together the same weekend to celebrate the glorious baseball tradition in Daniels County. Players from Doc Norman's first Legion team in 1959 through Scobey’s last team in 2019 will be there, spanning 60 years. Please join the Blues in remembering old times! “This Is Baseball Country” Friday, June 27, 2025, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Richardson Theater This event is open to everyone! Former Scobey baseball players are encouraged to register their attendance at https:// www.eventcreate.com/e/blues4life (other attendees need not register). On the first day of the 1969 State American Legion Baseball Tournament in Scobey, an article titled "Baseball Country" appeared in the Daniels County Leader , proudly announcing to all the visiting teams that Daniels County was historically baseball territory. This three-hour walk down memory lane (with an intermission) will include pictures on the big screen and will revisit the glorious baseball past in Daniels County, starting with the first Scobey town team in 1914, the 1925 Scobey Giants with two former Chicago White Sox players, Scobey's first American Legion team in 1930, and the great Scobey Plainsmen teams of the 1950s and 1960s. The program will transition to the Scobey Blues teams that won eight state championships between 196982, and all the great Blues teams that came before and after the championship era, including Doc Norman's first team in 1959, the Don Lekvold teams from 19831991, through the year the program folded in 2003, ending with the Blues who played from 20162019. Facilitated by Joe Puckett, former players, coaches, and opponents will be invited to share their stories and celebrate their memories of Baseball Country. **While open to everyone, parents should note the event is rated PG-13-some language and stories that will be shared might not be suitable for children. 1959 Scobey Legion Team “Field of Dreams,” Saturday June 28, 2025, 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Scobey Ball Park Former Blues, bring your gloves! (Or just come and watch the fun.) Former players and fans are invited to the Scobey Ball Park for an afternoon of play, continuing the celebration of Scobey baseball memories from the Richardson Theater on Friday. The event will open with a ceremony, including the presentation of the colors, national anthem, an opening prayer (including a moment of silence to remember all of the Blues who have passed before us), a recitation of the American Legion Code of Honor, recognition of all the former coaches, and concluding with the ceremonial first pitch. Then players can find their favorite teammate to play catch with and get warmed up to take infield and maybe hit some balls (whatever the old body feels capable of) or just watch the fun and talk to former players and fans across the years and share your favorite memories of the Scobey Ball Park. Pitchers can try to snap one last curve ball off if they can find a catcher to catch it. The famous Legion Burgers will be sizzling! The afternoon will conclude with the "Honking of the Horns," remembering the cheering cars parked around the ballpark that would applaud the great plays and wins all those years ago. "They never kept score, they never chose sides, they never even really stopped playing the game. It just went on forever. Every day they picked up where they left off the day before. It was like a dream game." (From the movie The Sandlot .) 2019 Scobey Blues “The Blues of Summer,” Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 27-29, 2025, opening hours at the Daniels County Museum and Pioneer Town Stop by “The Blues of Summer” booth at the Daniels County Museum and Pioneer Town to pick up your signed, preordered book, or buy one at the booth. To guarantee you get a copy, preorder at https:// aubadepublishing.com/ books/the-blues-of-summer . The Blues of Summer (Aubade Publishing, $24.99) is the nostalgic true story of a bygone era when baseball ruled the summers of Daniels County, Montana. (Look for a review by Mike Stebleton in a future issue of the Leader !) The book traces how the homesteaders brought the game to northeastern Montana in the early 1900s and how Daniels County-dubbed "Baseball Country" by the Daniels County Leader -was always passionate about baseball. Scobey was a magnet for talented baseball players, including Happy Felsh and Swede Risberg from the 1919 Chicago White Sox, who played for the Scobey town team in 1925. The Scobey town team became known as the Plainsmen and won two Montana state AAU and semipro championships in 1958 and 1960. But the book's heart is the story of the Scobey Blues American Legion Baseball team, which began playing in 1930 and won eight Montana state Class B Legion championships for legendary coach Clyde H. "Doc" Norman between 1969 and 1982. Author Joe Puckett, who played on four state Legion championship teams in the late 1970s, tells his baseball story and the story of the teams that came long before and well after his playing days.
