We’re Working to Earn Your Loyalty and Friendship . . . Be Here For Us & We’ll Continue To Be Here For You! NORTHERN BORDER D ISTRIBUTING When it comes to milk delivery along the northern international border in northeast Montana, it has been an All-In-The-Family gig for quite some time now — 97 years to be exact! Northern Border Distributing, Inc., owned by Tim and Ami Tande of Scobey, sells Viva and Meadow Gold dairy products and Sysco brand frozen foods to schools, eateries, grocery stores, convenience stores and many organizations putting on a big-to-do between Opheim and Plentywood. In August of 2013 Northern Border Distributing expanded when taking over most of the product line of Hi-Line Wholesale of Wolf Point, which shut down its operations when the owners retired from the business. Northern Border Distributing added many candies, chips and tobaccos to its distribution system — basically anything a convenience store sells. It also sells many paper products, including anything from bathroom supplies to kitchen supplies. According to the 1927 issue of the Daniels County Leader, Tim’s great great uncle James Tande started a daily milk delivery route in Richland, located in northeast Valley County. James Tade’s nephew, Ed Tade, had milk cows and later a dairy processing plant in Nashua. Ed Tade’s son, Marvin Tade, moved to Scobey in 1949 and started Tade Dairy when milk was still delivered in glass bottles. Ed’s other son, Ron Tade, later joined his brother, Marvin, in the business and in the late 1970s bought out Marvin’s share. By 1993, Ron and his wife, Norma (nee: Girard), sold the business to their daughter, Jacki, and Jay Crandell. On December 31, 1998, Tim Tande (SHS ‘95) closed a deal to purchase Crandell Distributing from Jay and Jacki, thus the birth of Northern Border Distributing. Tim is the son of Jim and the late Karen Tande of Scobey. Karen was the daughter of Marvin Tade, who was Tim’s grandfather. Tim’s wife and partner in the business, Ami (nee: Richardson, SHS ‘96) is the daughter of Jeff Richardson and Jodi Tade. In addition to Tim and Ami, Preston Baldry (SHS ‘17) is the other full-time time employee of the business. As noted, this long-time local business has been all in the family since its inception and rapidly closing in on one full century. There is a unique feature of Northern Border Distributing one just does not see these days and that is it still has house-to-house, door-to-door milk delivery every Tuesday and Friday from 6-7:30 a.m. in Scobey. This service is available upon request by calling 487-5141, which is the Northern Border Distributing office on Scobey’s First Avenue West. Other telephone numbers one needs to know is the company’s warehouse (487-5142) on the north end of Golf Course Road and the company’s fax number (also 487-5142). The email address is igotmilk@nemont.net. Lots of milk! TIM TANDE, on December 31, 1998, purchased Crandell Distributing and renamed it Northern Border Distributing. In 2001 he married Ami Richardson. Today, the two, plus full-time employee Preston Baldry, are still working hard to distribute food products in northeast Montana, just like nearly a century ago.
