Former MAYOR’S MUSINGS I had not intended to wait so long to say a “good-bye” to all of Scobey after leaving to return to Punky's home town of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. It's been two months since the moving truck picked up our belongings and took them the 1,000 miles to Rhinelander to our "for ever" home. It has been quite the adventure selling and buying a house and getting settled into it. Our first night in our new home was Thanksgiving night. I met Punky in Rhinelander when I worked at Rhine lander Telephone Company. My whole 55 year account ing career has been with telephone companies. Punky has been with me in moves from Rhinelander to Phil lips, WI to Ajo, AZ and finally to retire in Scobey, MT. Af ter taking her from border to border and half way across the country it was time to return her to her hometown. A couple of fun facts about Rhinelander putting it into perspective with MT. Its 2020 census was 8,285 while Miles City, MT was 69 greater at 8,354. Its latitude is 45.63618N while Billings, MT is 45.78387N. While we're getting settled in joining bowling leagues and in anticipation of joining dart-ball, horseshoe, and pool leagues we're missing our friends and loved ones we left behind. There were many good times relaxing and enjoying all Scobey has to offer. Thank you to all for the well-wishes and kind words upon our departing get-togethers and departure. We were so comfortable in our home on Main Street. We were ecstatic to finally get next-door neighbors after 14 years at looking at an empty house. Contrary to what some might think, it was not their moving in that led to our moving out. They are loved and missed. We're now 5+ miles from town on 1.8 acres and have no close neighbors. Quite the contrast. It was with heavy hearts we said good-bye, for now, to friends and loved ones. Scobey is a great, small community. It looks out for one another and is there to help those in need. My eight years of public service as your mayor, more than half of our time in Scobey, was requiring as well as rewarding. Thank you to all who supported me, as well as those who gave constructive criticism. We look forward to any and all who would like to visit us. We will return to Scobey for an occasional visit. Maybe not so much during winter driving months, but, nearest Amtrak station is 2.5 hours away and the airport is 15 minutes away. Take care of each other. Be kind to one another. And most of all, be happy! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2024! And I'm still - "Respectful of the Past, Receptive to the Future.” As always … and out and about.
