Fifteen Huddle In One

Car; Escape Death–

A treacherous lull Sunday in a freezing, blinding 5-day snowstorm in northeastern Montana ended so quickly Sunday afternoon that personal disaster threatened everyone who could not take immediate shelter.

Concern was directed that evening toward the hopeless plight of eight adults and seven children, who were in cars between Scobey and Flaxville. These people had left Scobey after the Sunday matinee. Two miles out of Flaxville the missing cars had bogged in the snow Sunday afternoon, they decided to get in one car – fifteen people. They waited, at midnight the car heater stopped, the car was out of gas. They were found Monday morning.

Winter weather for February has set a 30-year record on the bad side. (Several others are mentioned in a storm survival article.)

Spartans Again Book

Game With Plentywood– Arrangements again have been made for Scobey to play basketball against the Wildcats at Plentywood before tournament time. New date is Feb. 13.

Both teams are anxious to check out on each other before the district tourney – Spartans because they want to see how much “Big Boy” Johnson has improved the Plentywood squad; and the Wildcats because they want to test the quality of their new offense and defense.

Passengers Ride Engine When Train Sticks In Drift–

Today the eastbound branch line train left Scobey about 11 a.m. and nearly three hours later rolled into Flaxville minus the passenger cars and snowplow.

About a half mile west of Flaxville the train had entered a deep cut which had drifted high in today’s storm. There it was stuck by drifts which pinched against the walls of the cars and trucks.

The engine pulled the baggage car and two box cars into Flaxville. A 16-man crew remained to dig out the passenger car and snowplow left behind. Westbound train service is not expected today. The snowplow behind the eastbound train was broken in operations near Opheim. It was being taken into Williston for repairs.

460 More Votes For Edna Grove In Beauty Contest–

Bad weather has apparently had little effect on Peerless supporters in their efforts to put over Edna K. Grove as Miss Daniels County in the current beauty contest to raise funds for the new hospital.

This week $460 in checks was received with Miss Grove as the recipient in votes. Her total is now 1607 – more than a thousand votes ahead of the other contestants.

Graveside Services For Jacobson Child–

Graveside services were conducted Wednesday for John Jacobson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Severin Jacobson of Scobey. The infant was born Jan. 26 and died Feb. 1. Moves Into New Home–

Lloyd Edlunds have moved into their new home located at the corner of 1st and Janus in Scobey. They moved and were settled in their house about an hour before the start of Sunday’s terrible snow storm. Rasmus Nelson Hires Bob Burns For His Show– Bob Burns, whose songs and original renditions on the bazooka have filled treasured albums in extraordinary music, will appear in Scobey in the movie “The Windjammer” on Feb. 17 in connection with an implement show sponsored by Rasmus Nelson.

The Bob Burns picture, in addition to four shorts on farm implements, will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Rex Theatre. After the show, free lunch will be served at the Scobey Lutheran Church.

Brush Your Teeth–

The admonition “Brush your teeth regularly each night, and after every meal,” can well be heeded in this community by everyone.

Dr. and Mrs. W.P. Mc-Daniel left by train on a vacation trip to the dentist’s ancestral home at Clifton Forge, Virginia. They expect to be gone three weeks.

Meanwhile, in this community, the closest dentist will be Plentywood, Wolf Point, and Glasgow.

rial Hospital Benefit Dance will be held in the Scobey gym Saturday, Feb. 8 with music by the Modernaires. Beauty Queen Contest votes bought this night at the dance entitle buyer to free admission.

Reach Higher Montana Launches Win-AScholarship Competition

Every year Reach Higher Montana holds a competition to allow students to use their creative side to win scholarship dollars.

The competition asks students to design a sticker that helps pass along the message to fellow students to find their path after high school.

The top two designers will each receive a $1,500 scholarship. The third and fourth place designers will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The fifth and sixth place designers will each receive a $500 scholarship. This year we have added a Judges Choice Award, the winner will receive a $500 scholarship. The high school art programs of the respective winning students will also receive $250 to purchase art supplies or equipment.

Entries can be submitted at ReachHigherMontana.org by March 15, 2022.

The winning sticker designs will be produced and sent to all Montana high schools in the fall as part of the Stick-With-Scholarships campaign. As part of that effort, Reach Higher Montana gives out six $500 scholarships to students who enter the competition by posting a picture of one of the stickers on their social media account and tagging Reach Higher Montana.

The Design-A-Sticker, Win-A-Scholarship Competition is part of Reach Higher Montana’s efforts to help students use their creativity to access resources to continue their education.

The Reach Higher Montana website provides access to a list of hundreds of scholarships for Montana students, and the organization posts new scholarship opportunities on its Facebook and Instagram pages every Thursday.

THERE WERE PLENTY OF GREAT ….

THERE WERE PLENTY OF GREAT PRIZES to be won during the Borderline Snow Chasers annual gathering at the Scobey Saddle Club Saturday, January 29. The photo above shows just a portion of the people who purchased tickets and deposited them into buckets to have their name drawn to pick a prize. The biggest prize was won by Dennis Delagrave, which was the 2022 Polaris snowmobile. Below, Chance Hammar (foreground) and his father, Don Hammar, start cooking 8-ounce ribeyes for the hungry crowd inside the Saddle Club. A great prize for next year’s event would be a big batch of snow in order to conduct the snowmobile drag races, which were a no-go last week. — Leader Photos, mike
