End Regular Season In Nashua, Wolf Point
The Scobey Spartans made amends of the 60-26 shellacking it absorbed against the visiting Glasgow Scotties 16 days prior with a slim 45-42 win last Saturday night on the Class B team’s
home court.
Coupled with conference- game victories against Dodson and North Country the two nights prior, the Spartans take a 12-4 overall record into the final weekend of the regular season. Scobey travels to Nashua (2-14, 582-918, 36.3-57.3) Friday and Wolf Point (12-4, 945-841, 59.0-52.5) Saturday.
The 34-point loss to the Scotties in Scobey Thursday, January 20, was one of the most lopsided losses the Spartans have experienced in a looooooong time and they were ready to turn things around Saturday
night.
Tipping off at 7:22 p.m., Scobey took a 4-0 lead on Gage Hallock and Reagan Machart baskets before Glasgow came back to tie it at 4-all. Hudson Kjos made it 7-4 on a 3-point field goal and by the 2-minute mark of the second period, when Hallock sank a pair of free throws, the Spartans had their largest lead of the contest at 24-11.
The Scotties lowered the gap to four points on four occasions during the initial six minutes of the third frame before freshman Wyatt Babb made it 33-31 and junior Riley Smith netted a reverse layup for the second
and final tie at 33.
If there was a turning point it was provided by 5-foot-9 sophomore Braxton Wolfe. He drilled a 3-point field goal from the left wing
for a 36-33 lead to end the
third period. After the break, he opened the fourth quarter with a step-back trey, also from the left wing, for a 39-33 lead. Machart added a deuce and Scobey led 41-33 with just over 5 and one-half minutes to go.
The Scotties fought back when seniors Bergen Miller and Dalton Sand sank 3-point field goals, the latter rolling in and out of the rim before dropping back in to close within 41-39.
Hallock and Babb swapped buckets to keep it a 2-point difference before junior Keigan Ingram made a free throw to close within 43-42.
Glasgow was whistled for a technical foul and Hallock made the first free throw and missed the second for a 44-42 margin with 32.8 seconds remaining.
Glasgow had the opportunity to tie the score with a trip to the free-throw line at the 8.6-second mark but the ball missed the mark.
Hudson Kjos secured the rebound and was fouled with 7 seconds left. The Scobey senior missed the first free throw but sank the second for a 3-point victory.
The Spartans began the week on Thursday, February 3, with a trip to Dodson for a game that was postponed by the Coyotes orginally scheduled for January 22. The Spartans prevailed 68-33.
The next night they hosted North Country and rolled to an 86-40 win.
Scobey closes out the regular season on the road by playing in Nashua Friday, February 11 (JVB 4:30 p.m. VB 7:30 p.m.). The next night they enter the Wolves’ Den Gym to take on Wolf Point (CB 12 p.m., JVB 3 p.m., VB 6 p.m.).

A mere two games remain in the 2021-22 regular season for the Scobey varsity girls’ basketball team before it heads south to Wolf Point for the District 3C Tournament set for February 16-19.
The Spartans (9-7, 602-503, 37.6-31.4) are scheduled to play at the Nashua Porcupines (10-6, 643-641, 40.1-40.0) Friday, February 11 (JV 3 p.m., V 6 p.m.) and at the Wolf Point Wolves (11-5, 887-701, 55.4-43.8) Saturday, February 12 (JV 1:30 p.m., V 4:30 p.m.).
Both games are scheduled to be aired live on Scobey radio station KCGM
95.7 FM.
In the first go-round this season in Scobey the home team prevailed 47-28 against the Porcupines and 43-38 against the Wolves.
The Spartans won one of their three games in last weekend’s action.
At Dodson Thursday the third, a makeup game postponed by the Coyotes on January 22 due to health issues, it was knotted at 13 through 8 minutes of action.
Scobey pulled away with a 14-2 second quarter, limiting the ‘Yotes to just a pair of made free throws. It did the same thing in the third period by allowing just one made field goal while scoring a dozen points of its own for a 39-17 advantage in an eventual 46-26 District 3C win.
Senior Whitley Maher led the blue and gold in scoring with 9 points while senior Karys Lamb and freshman Kaytie Aanstad each had 8.
Conference leader North Country visited Scobey on Friday, which was the final home game of the season, and it was pretty if one is from Saco, Whitewater or Hinsdale.
The Mavericks, certainly a contender to win it all this season, led by just 6-3 through one quarter of play. In the second quarter the separation began and the Mavs took a 22-12 advantage into halftime.
North Country, allowing a very miserly 21.8 points per game defensively through its 14 games, outscored the Spartans 37-18 in the second half for a 59-30
final.
Carrie Taylor led Scobey with 12 points, half of them on a pair of 3-pointers, while senior Jaycee Erickson topped the Mavs with 20 markers, four made buckets from inside the 3-point arc
and four outside of it.
Conventional wisdom says these two teams have not seen the last of each other on the basketball court
this season. The third game in three nights was a non-conference clash with the Scotties in Glasgow.
While it was a close one throughout, the Spartans never had the lead as Daley Aune’s bucket just seconds after the opening tip-off put
Glasgow up for good.
However, it stayed close nearly the whole game until there were 3 minutes to go.
For instance, by the conclusion of the first quarter it was 11-6 Glasgow but it was closer than the score would suggest. A 3-pointer by Daisy Hersel midway through the second period and an Aanstad field goal with 1:15 left kept the Spartans within striking distance.
Field goals by Abby Willis, Lamb and Maher throughout the initial 4 minutes of the third had Scobey back within 20-19. In the dying seconds of the quarter Emily Anderson dropped in a long 2-pointer and Scobey was still within 24-23 with 8 minutes to go.
The exclamation point was when Glasgow senior Tyann Graham drilled a 3-point field goal followed by a Scobey turnover and then followed by Graham netting another trey for a 30-23 lead.
Taylor’s bucket made it a 5-point difference but the Scotties outscored their guests 6-2 the rest of the way for a 36-27 win to cap Senior Night.

Martin Farver (SHS ‘19) was kicking you-know-what in his first two indoor track meets for the Dickinson State University Bluehawks, and then he broke his forearm in practice.
The good news is it will heal in time for the upcom- ing outdoor track and field season and he should be competing once again.
In the Spearfish, South Dakota meet, his first of the 2022 indoor season, he placed first in the 60-meter dash in 7.06 seconds. He also competed on the 1,600-meter relay team placing second in 3:33.14.
In his second and final indoor meet, the University of North Dakota Open in Grand Forks January 28-29, he placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 50.02 seconds. The winning time was 48.08 by Cody Roder of North Dakota State University. In the 200-meter dash Farver placed fourth in 22.09. The winning time of 21.87 was posted by Alex Brosseau of NDSU.
Farver will be able to start doing light workouts in about three weeks and will be ready to go for the first
outdoor meet of the season in the first week of April.
Emerson of the Lame Deer Morning Stars poured in 82 points — 51 by halftime — in a 111-27 win over the Forsyth Dogies to establish a new boys’ standard.
Who’s next… and how
soon?
Records are made to be broken, as the old saying goes, but nobody would have thought it would be done quite so quickly.
Damon Gros Ventre of the top-ranked Class B Lodge Grass Indians poured in a state record 71 points on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 in a 108-70 victory at Huntley Project High School.
The outpouring of points broke the Montana High School Association boys’ basketball record of 68 by Brad Cichosz of the Harlem Wildcats. He broke the prior mark against the Poplar Indians in February 2020.
