Here is an opportunity to see the differences: There are two weekly polls being conducted in Montana for Montana High School Association basketball, which includes Classes AA, A, B and C. One is by MontanaSports.com, which is the Montana Television Network. It includes CBS affiliates KTVQ in Billings, KRTV in Great Falls, KXLH-LD in Helena, KXLF in Butte, KBZK in Bozeman, KPAX in Missoula and KAJJ-CD in Kalispell. The NBC affiliates include KTVH in Helena and KTGF in Great Falls. The other weekly poll is the 406mtsports.com poll, which consists of voters from the Lee Newspapers group. It includes sports writers from the Billings Gazette Independent Record in Helena, Missoulian The Montana Standard in Butte and Ravalli Republic in Hamilton. In future editions of the Leader we will only publish the MontanaSports.com polls released on Monday nights, that way we can have the up-to-date rankings for our readers that week. We would like to publish the 406mtsports.com polls as well but if it continues to be released on Tuesday nights, it is no-can-do as the Leader has already been printed in Helena, starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday. If 406mtsports.com shifts back to a Monday night release, as it did in the past before this season, we will print its Class C polls as well. All said, as interesting as it is to look over these polls on a week-by-week basis, the only polls counting for anything, whether its Class AA, A, B or C in both girls and boys, are the ones conducted on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Missoula (Class AA), Butte (A), Billings (B) and Great Falls (C) when state-tourney championships games are conducted.

Lady Spartans Earn Huge Win In Circle, Moving Them Into Second

They not only won but did so by more than one point, which means if the Scobey varsity girls’ basketball squad and Circle Wildcats end up tied in the conference standings at the conclusion of the regular season, it will be advantage Spartans.

The Roundtowners edged Scobey 38-37 December 16 in Scobey. The Spartans traveled south Saturday, January 20, and registered a 41-31 win.

It was close in the early going where Scobey led nearly the entire first quarter until Madelene Moline turned a tough shot into a 7-6 Circle lead.

That was it, however, as Claire Lekvold’s 3-point field goal to open the second-quarter scoring gave Scobey the lead for good. By intermission it was still close at 13-11 but field goals by Kennadi Cromwell and Kaytie Aanstad and a free throw by Kayla Carney pushed the margin to 23-14. Moline’s bucket to end the third-frame scoring put the Wildcats back within striking distance at 25-20.

It was the last time Circle would be close to the Spartans on the scoreboard as Aanstad and Cromwell netted baskets for a 9-point lead. The gapped widened considerably when eighth grader McKenna Nieskens drained a left-wing 3-point field goal with six and a half minutes left in the quarter for a 32-20 advantage. A very short time later she hit another trey making it a 15-point lead.

After Charlie Moline scored for the Wildcats, freshman Kayla Carney missed a 3-point attempt but followed the shot, grabbed the offensive rebound, shot and made it, was fouled and converted the 3-point play for Scobey’s largest advantage at 38-22.

Junior Mya Green, scoring with a nice follow through after contact, and Carney with a free throw closed out Scobey’s scoring for the afternoon.

The Spartans opened the weekend at home Friday to the Dodson Coyotes and took a quick 6-0 advantage on 3-pointers by Camrie Holum and Mia Handran.

Kataya KillEagle, Dodson’s best player who netted a pair of 3-pointers in the first frame to keep things close, opened the second frame with a 2-pointer. Baylee Johnson’s offensive rebound putback gave the Coyotes their only lead at 12-11.

Cromwell made sure it was not going to last long by dropping in a trey to regain the lead for good. After Handran (deuce) and Green (trey) made it 1912, Cromwell struck again from 3-point territory, Chloe Handran and Camrie Holum produced field goals and Carney connected on a pair of free throws for a 28-16 halftime lead.

Scobey outscored Dodson 20-11 in the third quarter for a 48-27 lead later turning into a 59-34 victory.

A moment nobody wanted to witness occurred with 6 minutes left in the matchup as KillEagle, without a doubt Dodson’s best player on the floor that night, dropped to the floor with some type of leg injury and needed help of the court. Here’s hoping she is back by district tourney time in Glasgow.

This week’s action is just one game, which is Wolf Point at Scobey Friday, January 26 (JVG 3 p.m., VG 6 p.m.) in non-conference action. However, early next week on Tuesday the 30th it will be Scobey at Nashua in a make-up game orginally scheduled for January 12. It was postponed due to a wind-chill factor dipping into the minus 40-to-60 degree range while Spartans would have been on the road. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Here are the current standings of the District 3C as of Saturday’s games:

• North Country 7-0, 12-0

• Scobey 5-2, 10-2

• Circle 4-2, 9-2

• Lustre Christian 4-3, 9-3

• Frazer 3-4, 6-5

• Dodson 1-7, 3-8

• Nashua 0-6, 0-10

Lady Spartans Move Upwards In Power Poll

It was a road-trip win with loads of value and those casting ballots were well aware of it.

Welcome to the world of the Scobey girls’ basketball program, which MTN Sports voters vaulted them from 9th-ranked to 6thranked in its weekly Class C girls power poll Monday night. The move up in the rankings occurred after a gutsy 41-31 Scobey victory in Circle against a very good Wildcats team, which is ranked 9th.

The other three topranked girls’ teams are Billings Skyview in Class AA, Havre in Class A and Huntley Project in Class B.

Meanwhile the Scobey boys remain atop MTN Sports’ Class C poll with an undefeated record, as do Bozeman High in Class AA, Hamilton in Class A and Missoula Loyola in Class B. Here are the current Class C rankings (see related story on page 7):

CLASS C GIRLS 1. North Country (Saco-Whitewater-Hinsdale) 2. Twin Bridges 3. Roberts 4. Big Sandy 5. Bainville 6. Scobey 7. Roy-Winifred 8. Belt 9. Circle 10. Melstone.
