Shell Oil to Spend $2 Million in N.E. Area– Thomas Barnes, senior geologist for the Shell Oil Company, in a semi-public meeting at Wolf Point stated the company “has committed itself to a $2,000,000 expenditure in 1951 for oil exploration in northeast Montana.

He included among his remarks that only one out of 10 or 12 wells are successful and that drilling operations at a site are begun because previous investigation points to that spot are most likely. He emphasized that only by actual drilling, at a minimum cost of $250,000, can a company determine if there is oil.
