Heather Brower earns the distinction of turning into the Leader newspaper the first photo of a crocus spotted in the area. She snapped the photo over the past week south of the Navajo area.

The crocus has been known throughout recorded history, mainly as the source of saffron. There are over 200 crocus species (we believe the ones in this area don’t have saffron).

Saffron is obtained from the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, an autumn-blooming species. It is valued as a spice and dyestuff, and is one of the most expensive spices in the world . . . oh, oh!! Iran is the center of saffron production.
