A Look Back At Every Game Played By Champion Spartans
Now that the well-deserved excitement has settled down a bit it is time to recap the 2025-26 Scobey boys’ basketball program.
The Spartans (26-1, 1959-867, 72.5-32.1) produced an 18-0 overall record in the regular season and, after receiving a firstround bye at the District 3C Tournament in Glasgow, went on to defeat the North Country Mavericks 62-30 in the semifinals and Circle Wildcats 68-46 in the championship game. After an open weekend of rest and relaxation, letting some of those bumps and bruises heal a little bit, the Spartans headed south to Miles City to compete in the East C Divisional Tournament at Custer County District High School.
After defeating the Savage Warriors 75-20 in the first round and Carter County (Ekalaka) Bulldogs 81-38 in the semifinals, the Spartans were paired against District 3C mate Lustre Christian Lions in the championship.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead, Scobey went ahead 3-2, the Lions went up 4-3, then it was knotted at 4.
Lustre Christian made a move in the second period to go up by as much as 2615 and, later at the start of the third quarter, 34-22.
The Spartans took their second advantage at 35-34 with 1:56 remaining in the third but the Lions snatched it right back, ahead 38-37 heading into the final 8-minute stanza.
The scoring spurt continued into the fourth quarter, now an 11-0 run, giving the Lions a 47-37 edge.
Scobey shot back and closed within 50-49 and 51-50 but the Lions roared at the free-throw line, hitting a pair with 8.4 seconds and another two with 1.3 seconds to go, making for a 55-50 final in favor of the Lions.
The loss, coupled with Circle’s victory in the consolation game, meant a Monday night challenge game in Wolf Point’s Wolves’ Den Gym, where the Spartans easily won 79-41 after racing to a 26-8 advantage through the first quarter.
By the time the Spartans returned to Scobey late Monday night, the team had about a 6-hour window to get packed and be on a bus again bound for Missoula and the State C Tournament, which departed around the 6 a.m. time frame.
By the mid-afternoon of Wednesday, 3 p.m. to be exact, the Spartans were once again playing b-ball, a firstround date with the Winnett-Grass Range Rams. They hung tight for the first quarter but by halftime it was 4127 and 52-30 through three and eventually 71-45 in the end in favor of the boys wearing blue and gold.
The Spartans battled with the Belt Huskies in the Thursday night semifinal and led 19-8 through one quarter, 40-24 at the half, and 55-33 through three before it ended 78-40 with the Daniels County kids on top.
When Lustre Christian handled the Manhattan Christian Eagles 53-34 in the semifinals, it meant the Lions and Spartans would be meeting for the fourth time in the season on the biggest of stages.
It was a tight one, knotted at 16-all at the end of the first quarter, but Scobey created some separation by outscoring the Lions 15-3 in the second period, using made shots from Cooper Axtman (8 points), Cam Cromwell (3-pointer), Kolten Machart (2) and Brecken Maher (2) for a 31-19 lead at the half.
The Lions did get back within a 3-possession game at 38-29 in the final minute of the third period and did close within 43-35 on Johnslee Pierre’s layup but the Spartans posted a 56-39 victory.
