Spartan Boys Take 23-Game Winning Streak Into 2025-26

The only way to describe the Scobey High School boys’ basketball program since its last defeat, a 68-55 semifinal loss to eventual Class C state champion Box Elder Bears is simple: undefeated at 23-0. Keep in mind only two of those games were official Montana High School Association contests, which were a 70-52 win over Lustre Christian in a State C Tournament loser-out game and 59-35 over Fort Benton in the consolation, allowing the Spartans to return home with the third-place trophy.

In their summer-balltourney circuit they posted a 21-0 record. Add it all up and the 23-game win streak lives to play another day, which includes victories over nine Class C teams, five Class B, seven Class A, one Class AA and one against a Scobey alumni team, a 6966 one-overtime contest, the Spartans’ closest contest of the current streak.

Their opportunity to lift it to 24 straight wins is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9, in Plentywood against the Wildcats, the 2025-26 season- opener for the Spartans.

Here is a look back at the 2024-25 season:

Fri., Dec. 6, 2024 — Scobey (56) defeated Bridger Scouts (25) at Coach Connors Classic, Miles Community College Centra, Miles City. Double-digit scorers: Cooper Axtman 17, John Carney 13, Bram Handran 12. Halftime score: 29-13 Sco. For your information (FYI): The Spartans, with nary a senior player to be found on the 2024-25 roster, took their first double-digit lead when opening the season a 19-9 advantage. Following was a 16-1 scoring run to create a 35-13 lead in the first three and one-half minutes into the second quarter.

Sat., Dec. 7 — Scobey (65) defeated Melstone Broncs (20) at Coach Connors Classic, Miles Community College Centra, Miles City. Double-digit scorers: Brecken Maher 12, Carney 10, Evan Tande 10. Halftime score: 41-5. FYI: Scobey raced to a quick 9-0 lead, expanded it to 22-2 by the end of the first quarter and in the end won by a 46-point margin.

Fri., Dec. 13 — Scobey (83) defeated Plentywood Wildcats (61) in Scobey. Double-digit scorers: Carney 44, B. Handran 17. Halftime score: 42-26 Sco.

FYI: Carney exploded for a thusfar career-high 44 points, drilling a dozen three-point field goals. For good measure he also dropped in four 2-point field goals. Asher Handran tallied his first-ever varsity points with a 2-point field goal.

Fri., Dec. 20 — Scobey (83) defeated Dodson Coyotes (23) in Scobey. Double-digit scorers: Axtman 13, Carney 13, Kolten Machart 12, B. Handran 10, Maher 10. Halftime score: 51-17 Sco. FYI: The Spartans opened with a 12-0 scoring run in the initial 2:42 of the first quarter and never looked back. Somewhat sadly, it was the final time Scobey hosted the Coyotes in on the Spartans’ in District 3C action as they are moving over to the North Division in the 2025-26 season (unless down the road at some point they get moved back to the East C Division. One great thing about the Coyotes is this: they always played the very best they could and always had fun doing so!

Sat., Dec. 21 — Scobey (57) defeated Circle Wildcats (41) in Circle. Double-digit scorers: Carney 17, B. Handran 12. Halftime score: 28-16 Sco. FYI: Happy holidays for the Spartans as they entered the Christmas break with a 5-0 record. The Wildcats took their one and only lead at 1-0 and later knotted it at 12 but thereafter Scobey ruled.

Sat., Jan. 4, 2025 — Scobey (70) defeated Wolf Point Wolves (26) in Scobey. Double-digit scorers: Carney 27, Machart 12.
