One down, an unknown number to go.

Welcome to the 2023 Montana High School Association track and field season, which, meet-wise, officially started on Friday, March 24, for six Montana schools in neighboring North Dakota.

Montana girls’ teams from Scobey, Culbertson, Frazer and Savage plus North Dakota’s Trinity Christian of Williston met Friday, March 24, at The Arc, a beautiful indoor facility located next to Williston State College. The aforementioned teams were joined by Fairview and Wolf Point on the boys’ side of the competition.

The roster-heavy Scobey Spartans emerged the winners, with the gals tallying 148 points and guys 159.

Now the question becomes this: when will the next meet occur for the Spartans?

On the Scobey schedule for Friday, March 31, is the Glasgow Invitational at Scottie Field, which is an outdoor meet.

The weather forecast is calling for a high of 37 degrees, which usually doesn’t occur until the 3:30-4:30 p.m. time frame. The meet begins at 9 a.m., and it is a guarantee the temperature won’t be 37 above at that time.

Will it be a go or no? Twenty-six teams from 29 schools are awaiting the answer, and could very well be doing so the following week on Thursday, April 6, when the Wibaux Invitational is scheduled to go in Glendive.

Nobody wants to hear this but the weather could play a big part in these earlyseason meets are conducted or not because there is still a lot of snow on the ground in eastern Montana and who knows what the temperatures are going to do. In addition, it could start snowing again.

You are not inside The Arc anymore!
