This whole thing executed by the Scobey High School boys’ golf team officially began during the late afternoon hoursofWednesday, May15, 2024 at the Hamilton Golf Clubintheextremesouthwest corner of Montana, 46 highway miles south of Missoula.

On that day long-time Scobey head coach John States and assistant coach Greg Hardy watched their golfers compete the best they could. In the end, their best effort earned them a 1-stroke victory over the Manhattan Christian Eagles by 261248—509 to 266-244—510. It was Scobey High’s firstever golf state championship for the boys’ program.

Let’s just say the 1,192mile roundtrip was worth every minute of it!

The course playing 3,244 yards, then-sophomore Cooper Axtman settled into a nice groove right away by parring his first four holes before two bogeys showed up on his scorecard. Next came a birdie, a par and a bogey for a 2-over-par 38. On the back-9 he parred three of his first five holes then went 6-over the rest of the way, putting him at 38-45—83 and in first place.

Senior BraxtonWolfe shot a 44-43—87, Coach States at the time saying “He was driving the ball really well, crushing it.”

Sophomore Brecken Maher started out at bogey-parpar- bogey, then was 7-over on the next four holes before parring for a nice 9-over 45.

Evan Tande, yet another sophomore, produced a consistent first round of 4547—92.

When day one was done the Spartans posted a team score of 261, same as the PowderRiverCountyHawks of Broadus with Manhattan Christian five strokes back at 266.
