The Scobey boys’ basketball program is celebrating another state championship after earning a 56-39 victory Saturday night in Missoula over District 3C mate Lustre Christian Lions.

It was the Spartans’ sixth state championship since the 1979 season (see Sports Stuff on page 7 for more on this subject). It was also the fourth state title for Scobey head coach Jason Wolfe as head coach, who produced championship seasons in 2010-11, 2019-20, 2020-21 and last week’s big victory for 2025-26.

The Spartans defeated the Winnett-Grass Range Rams 71-45 in Wednesday’s opening-round action and the Belt Huskies 78-40 in Thursday’s semifinals.

Saturday’s matchup tipped off at 7:28 p.m. in the University of Montana’s Dahlberg Arena on Robin Selvig Court.

The action was tight in the early going as Cooper Axtman popped a 3-point field goal and John Carney later added two more for a 9-5 lead. Lustre senior Johnslee Pierre hit a couple of field goals for a tie at nine but the Spartans went ahead by four as Bram Handran converted a 3-point play and a free throw creating a 4-point lead. As the first 8-minute stanza was winding down, Cam Reddig dropped in a 3-pointer creating a 16-all tie at the break.

It was the second quarter when the Spartans began creating some separation on the scoreboard as Kolten Machart broke the tie for a 2-point advantage and Axtman drained a 3-ball. After Cam Reddig netted a trey of his own to pull within 21-19, Scobey conjured up a 10-0 scoring run to make it 31-19 at the half.
