The United States Postal Service (USPS) post office update on its explanation of how the postmark process works and how it may affect submission dates, which may impact the submission dates for critical documents such as ballots, tax returns, and legal filings.

USPS will now postmark mail based on the date it is first processed by automated machinery, rather than the date it is physically dropped off at a post office. This change means that individuals relying on timely mail delivery may experience delays in postmarking by one or more days.
