Two playoff games down and at the very least one semifinal to go for the Scobey Spartans after the local gridiron guys eliminated the West Division’s St. Regis-Mullan Tigers 66-24 Saturday, November 8.

Played on their home grass turf of Plainsmen Field, the weather was anything but good for the topranked Spartans (10-0, 502130, 50.2-13.0). At opening kickoff time of 1 p.m. it was 29 degrees above zero but felt like 20 above with humidity at 77 percent and a 9-mile per hour wind.

Despite the weather being cold throughout the 1-hour and 36-minute contest, the Spartans played hot!

Right from the get-go senior Brecken Maher hauled in the opening kickoff and headed west, using his fleet of foot ability to tally on a 67-yard return and the Spartans were literally off and running.

Things certainly do not get any easier at this point in the season as it is semifinal time on Plainsmen Field Saturday, November 15, when Fort Benton pays a visit to northeast Montana.

When the Longhorns (11-0, 637-46, 57.9-4.1), with 11 seniors on the roster for Head Coach Monte Giese, start battling early Saturday afternoon, Scobey fans will be viewing in action these Fort Benton players: quarterback Truman Giese; running backs Eli Arganbright, Cooper Ferris and David Olson (who also plays receiver); receivers Brett Evans and Emerson Jacobs, the latter being a good defender; on the offensive line, which is very physical in its blocking, one will find Hunter Cole, who is solid at pass protection, and Zach Thomas; Brooks Diekhans has played both running back and receiver on offense.

On defense making plays will be Callum Ballantyne, Wyatt Cline, John Lippart and Kaidon Hull, the latter being a very sound tackler.

Middle linebacker Layne Wallace is a player who can control the field from sideline to sideline and also starts on the offensive line.

The 11 seniors have a cumulative 30-8 record and four straight playoff appearances over the past four varsity seasons.
