There was much volleyball played on the three courts in the two gyms at the Scobey School Saturday, September 13, when the local Spartans hosted a big tournament with 14 teams involving 18 schools lasting nearly 12 hours.

The Spartans placed fifth in the event, which began at 8 a.m.

The Circle Wildcats, with a strong history of a very solid program, emerged as the champion after defeating the North Country Mavericks of the Saco, Whitewater and Hinsdale communities.

In game one of three the Wildcats had 3-point leads leads of 20-17 and 21-18 before pulling away with a 25-20 win.

In game two North Country took a 3-0 advantage and led by as much as 11-6 before the Wildcats clawed their way back for ties at 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19 and 20, and taking a 13-12 lead just once in the span on Charlie Moline’s kill shot. The Mavs began pulling away from the tie at 20-all and when senior BaiLee McColly’s tip found a hole in the Circle defense it was 24-20. One serve later it was 25-20, which meant the deciding game three was next.

CharLee McColly, a senior outside hitter, tallied for North Country first and the advantage grew to 3-zip before the Wildcats made a move by going ahead 7-3. The Mavs knotted it at 7-all on a tip but Circle took the lead for good and went ahead 13-8 on a service ace by junior Allie Kountz. After North Country closed within...
