Scobey Girls 2nd, Lustre Boys 3rd In East C Division

Aanstad Strikes Again And Willis Joins Her

It was another big week of track and field for the Scobey Lady Spartans and Lustre Christian Lions boys’ squad when competing at the East C Divisional Meet in Sidney, Tuesday, May 13.

Originally scheduled for May 15 but moved up because rain was in the forecast for the Sidney area, the Scobey girls placed second with 89 points, trailing only champion Circle with 96.

On the boys side, Lustre Christian earned a trophy by placing third among 15 teams posting points, the Lions compiling 104. The prior week in Glasgow the Lions placed first in the District 3C Meet at Scottie Field with 165 points, barely doubling the Scobey boys with 86.5. Plentywood captured the East C team title with 122 points, Culbertson was the runnersup with 118 and the Lions earning the final trophy.

Held at Swanson Field at Lowman-Walton Sports Complex, the top five finishers in each event at the East C earned a berth at the State C Meet in Missoula, which started Thursday, and continued through Saturday, May 22-24. The 54th annual State C Girls/70th annual State C Boys Meets will be held at the same venue with the 57th annual State B Girls/83rd annual State B Boys Meets at Missoula County Public Stadium.

The Lady Spartans posted nine personal records and three seasonal marks last week at the East C meet, but none perhaps bigger than senior Kaytie Aanstad’s heave of the shot put, which earned her first place. With time quickly running out on her senior season, she established a new Scobey High School record in the shot put weighing 4 kilograms, heaving it 40 feet and 3.75 inches. The prior record of 39-5 by Shalice Maldonado (nee: Tommerup), a current assistant coach in the Scobey varsity program, stood for 20 years before it was surpassed last week in Sidney. Aanstad also broke the SHS girls discus record at the 43rd annual Norm Girard Top 10 Meet in Glasgow Tuesday, April 29.

In addition, senior Madelyn Willis, more commonly known as Mady, who will continue her track and field career at Dickinson State University in North Dakota, tied the SHS pole vault record in Sidney last week. Jessica Petersen broke the record in 1999 at 10 feet and Willis equaled it Tuesday, May 13, in Montana’s Sunrise City.

The personal records (PR) of Aanstad and Willis in the two aformentioned events were part a 9-PR performance by the Lady Spartans. Also picking up PRs in Sidney were: freshman Chloe Johnson, 200-meter dash, 14th; junior Olivia Leininger, pole vault, 5th and 100 hurdles, 6th; freshman McKenna Nieskens, 400, 8th and 800, 5th; freshman Ava Stentoft, 200-meter dash, 14th; shot put, 9th.

In the seasonal record (SR) category for the Scobey girls: Willis established a couple in the 100 hurdles (2nd) and 300 hurdles (2nd); junior Camrie Holum established one in the 800 (2nd).
