There is an old saying of, using the slang version, “something’s gotta give,” and for the Scobey High School girls' track and field program, it finally gave.

For the first time in the entire history of the Lady Spartans’ competing in the field and running on the track, 2024 became the year they brought back from the annual state meet a trophy. It was not the championship nor runnersup hardware, and it didn’t have to be, as the third-place trophy was more than just fine.

While the South C Division’s Roberts Rockets and East C Division’s Savage Warriors wound up in a 61-61 tie to share first place, the Scobey girls tallied 51 points to earn third place.

At one point on Friday, May 24, the Spartans were as high as second place with 19 points, just nine back of leader Roberts, while Whitewater was third at 14 with three-of-17 events completed.

From there, going into Saturday’s action, the Spartans simply gave it their all and hit the trophy jackpot.

Senior Mia Handran, who earned five medals over the weekend, individually scored 18 points by placing second in the 800-meter run, third in the 400-meter dash for a personal record (PR) and fourth in the 200-meter dash. In the 200 she estab lished a PR with a time of 26.59 in the preliminaries.

Junior Mya Green contributed heavily to the team's total tally as well. She took second in the 1600 with a seasonal record (SR), fourth in the 3200 and sixth in the 800 (PR).

“She ran really well over the weekend,” said Scobey veteran head coach Larry Henderson.

Junior Mady Willis decided to not play basketball last season so she could solely concentrate on track and field and the decision appears to have paid off. She scored a dozen points in three individual events— third in pole vault, fourth in 300 hurdles (SR), fifth in 100 hurdles (SR)—plus was on both relay teams tallying points.

“She had a great meet,” said Coach Henderson of Willis. "She barely missed clearing 9-6 in the pole vault, which would have been a personal record for her."

Junior Kaytie Aanstad tallied four team points in the shot put, where she heaved the 4-kilogram sphere 35 feet and 11 inches.

In the 4x400 relay the Lady Spartans earned four points by placing fourth in 4:13.51, which was a little over five seconds behind the winning foursome from Twin Bridges. Willis led off and handed the baton to Green, who gave it to sophomore Camrie Holum, who handed it to Handran for the final lap.

Scobey also earned one point in the 4x100 relay for placing sixth. In the prelimi naries Opheim High School senior Maria Landles led off and handed off to Handran. She passed the baton to senior Kinsey Anderson who gave it to Willis for the fi nal 100 meters. They were clocked at 52.29 in a field of 24 teams. In the finals against seven other squads they were clocked at 52.31.

While she didn’t tally points in her individual events, freshman Kayla Carney turned in two strong showings in the 1600-meter run (5:55.54, 10th out of 24) and pole vault (8-0, 4-way tie for 8th, PR).

The big news for the Scobey boys, who finished in a 3-way tie for ninth place in the team standings with 20 points, was the performances of senior Ty Leischner.
