Once the Scobey High School track and field teams found out the Cal Wearley Memorial Meet in Havre was postponed from Saturday, April 6, to Wednesday, April 10, they needed to find a replacement to get in the first meet of the season.

There was one scheduled in Red Lodge, but that’s 400 miles down and 400 miles back to Scobey. There had to be something closer.

There was, and it was only 264 miles down and another 264 to get back home. It was certainly worth it to get up early Saturday morning and scoot on down to Bowman, North Dakota, which is 45 miles east of Baker, Montana, to compete in the Bowman County Invitational.

Worth it because the Scobey boys placed first with 112 points, 15.5 better than the runnersup Sidney Eagles of Montana’s Class A.

If there was a star of the day for the Spartan boys, it would have to be senior Ty Leischner. He set a Scobey High School record in the long jump by sailing 21 feet and 1.5 inches, surpassing Zach Bowler’s record of 20 feet and 11 inches set in 1994. Leischner also posted victories in the high jump (6-foot-4) and triple jump (43 feet and 1 inch) plus placed 10th in the javelin (105 feet). If the wind hadn’t been rocking and rolling so hard he probably would have won the pole vault as well, but it was scrapped for safety concerns.
