Is there anything positive the Scobey varsity girls’ basketball team can take away from their 51-31 loss to the top-ranked and defending Class C state champion North Country Mavericks last Saturday night in Saco? Absolutely!

For starters, only three teams have held the Mavericks to 51 points or less on offense thus far this season: Melstone, in Miles City, limited them to 46; Roy-Winifred, in Lewistown, to 51; Scobey, in Saco, to 51. North Country was averaging 60.7 points per game going into the matchup with the Spartans.

How about this: Scobey is one of only three teams to tally 31 or more points against the Mavericks this season, with Roy-Winifred (32) and Twin Bridges (41) being the other two; the other six could manage only, in order played, 17, 27, 20, 18, 14 and 11.

That might not sound like much of a consolation prize, but it does say quite a bit about a mostly young Scobey team that has only one senior and two juniors on the roster.
