Huge Hoop Happening Here Has Top Two Class C Teams Clashing
WOLFE AND THE REF — As the pre-game warmups were winding down Friday, January 5, when the Frazer Bearcubs were making their annual visit to Daniels County, Scobey head coach Jason Wolfe (left) and Referee Randall Rice were having a discussion. If the head on-court official of the night was asking the local coach about his overall record after slightly more than two decades on the job, the answer was 344-110. However, it grew to 346-110 (.758) following victories over the Bearcubs and North Country Mavericks in Saco Saturday night. If Wolfe wins nine more games this season he will pull into a tie at 10th place all-time on the Montana High School Association boys’ coaching victory list, which is currently held by Doug Robinson of Billings West. With 10 more wins Wolfe will own the number 10 spot. — Leader Photo, mike

The only time a matchup like this is more significant is when tournament time rolls around in mid-to-late February or early March, or Saturday, February 10, when the District 3 conference championship could be on the line in the far-eastern reaches of Valley County.

It’s the top-ranked Class C boys’ basketball team in Montana, the Lustre Christian Lions, visiting the second- ranked Class C boys’ hoop squad in the state, the Scobey Spartans, meeting each other on Saturday, January 13. Opening tip-off time in the Scobey School large gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (Radio: KCGM 95.7 FM. TV: Nemont.TV).

Both will certainly be ready to rumble!

No team in this 2023-24 season has come close to upsetting Lustre Christian (9-0, 672-293, 74.6-32.5), which made its first-ever appearance in the 74th annual State C Tournament last year while finishing in sixth place. Its plan is qualifying for the 75th annual in Great Falls in March.

The Lions steamrolled MonDak (78-18) and Terry (68-25) at the Glasgow Showcase event to open the season and easily handled Broadus (78-48) and Froid-Lake (67-42) in the Scobey Tournament in week two action. Following were victories at Nashua (84-49), against Frazer (83-20), at Bainville (61-21), home to Dodson (83-28) and at Circle (70-42).
