If one is wondering where the name of Hinsdale, Montana came from, this might be the answer. Hinsdale, New Hampshire was named for Ebenezer Hinsdale, who was an officer in the French and Indian Wars. He built a fort and a grist mill there, in addition to building his own house there in 1759. When the railroad came west along Montana’s Hi-Line in the late 1880s, one writer said it was named after spinning a globe and the finger landed on or near Hinsdale, New Hampshire. Another source said it was named for a town in Illinois. — mike
