CROSS COUNTRY — The rest of the story: In the October 26, 2023 issue of the Leader on page six was the article about the Scobey teams competing in the 60th State Cross Country Championships held at Rebecca Farm northwest of Kalispell. The opening sentence of the article read as this: “As close as it seemed, it wasn’t even really that close when all things are considered.” It was explained that the Scobey Spartans (2-3-22=27) and Roberts Rockets (5-7-15=27) girls’ teams each posted a team score of 27 points, creating a tie for first place. The top three scores create the team score in Class C (top five in Classes AA, A and B). “How ties are broken in Class C cross country is by this method: whoever has the fourth runner with the lower time enjoys the spoils, and that turned out to be (Roberts) junior Lilly Hyvonen in 16th place, just under 10 seconds behind teammate (Faith) Pitts,” it stated in the October 26 issue.
