Jack Frederick, weighing in at 10 lbs., was born April 25, 1927 southwest of Flaxville on the Frederick Farm. He and his mother were cared for by Mrs. Geo.

Grosse at her home. Jack’s given name was John. He grew up working for local farmers, herding sheep and working on the Frederick Farm. Jack liked to brag that at the age of 10 he worked so hard that one local farmer paid him as much as a grown man.

Jack attended the Joy School during his primary years. It was during this time that he developed a collection of special rocks, spear and arrowheads, which he found all over the county. One spearhead is on the National Registry after being analyzed by professor’s from MSU and U of M. While in high school in Scobey, Jack participated in stage plays and began taking photographs.

After graduating from Scobey High in 1945, a number of Daniels County boys took off to enlist in the Army. Much to Jack’s surprise, it was found he had a genius level I.Q. Jack served from 1945 to 1947.

After Jack was discharged, he went back to work on the farm from 1947 to 1957.
