We read the other day . . .

•"The name Montana has some Spanish flair that links back to the Latin mons, for mountains.”

• “The name Montana was proposed in 1864 when the area was separated from the Nebraska Territory.”

• “The name Montana was proposed in 1864 when the area was separated from the Idaho Territory.”

We believe this one to be correct if following an exact chain of events.

We thought— the Montana territory separated from the Louisiana Territory (Louisiana Purchase).

Obviously it’s not clear to all historians. There seems to be several versions which may each hold so...
