Scobey Track/Field Looking Good Entering Home Stretch

The Scobey Spartans have much to cheer about this week in the world of track and field.

First, there was that extremely nice third-place fin ish by the Lady Spartans in the 61st annual Glendive Elks Invitational on Thursday, April 28. They trailed winner Williston, North Dakota, with 89 points and Plentywood with 82 points.

The Glendive gathering was a very large meet featuring 33 teams (22 Montana, 11 North Dakota) from 39 schools (24 Montana, 15 N.D.). For the Scobey girls to capture third in a big field is a big deal! Two days later at the Whitewater/Saco Invitational in Glasgow, the Scobey girls edged Plentywood by a 6-point margin for first place. The Scobey boys also placed first but did so with a larger margin, scoring 128 points while Culbertson was next-best with 87.5.

Something big occurred at both of those meets and it involves the pole vault.

In Glendive, J.P. Braut didn’t win it all — Glendive’s Cole Storle did at 14 feet, 9 inches — but the Scobey senior did place second with a seasonal-record of 13 feet. Two days later at the Whitewater-Saco Invite in Glasgow, Scobey senior Devon Southland won it all at 13 feet, a personal record. Going into that 3-day stretch the best pole vault height established in Montana’s Class C this season was a 12-6 by Jackson Tarum of the Great Falls Central Mustangs. Now the two Spartans share the classification's top height with the post-season just around the corner!

A few other notables from last week’s action in Glendive include: the 4x400 relay team of, in order ran, freshmen Mady Willis and Mya Green and sophomores Kinsey Anderson and Mia Handran placed first in a field of 21 teams; Opheim junior Carrie Taylor recorded a 112-foot, 10-inch toss in the javelin for second place; Willis is rolling right along in the two hurdle events.

The Scobey girls set 25 personal records at the Glendive meet while the Scobey boys achieved 16.

A few Spartan highlights from the Whitewater-Saco gathering in Glasgow include: sophomore Gage Hallock taking first in the 100-meter dash in 12.07 with teammate Zak Traeholt in second at 12.28; Traeholt winning the 200 in 24.09; Opheim’s Cole Taylor taking second in the 2-lapper and third in the 4-lapper; the 4x100 relay squad of, in order ran, Braut, Traeholt, Hallock and Reagan Machart placing first by 1.23 seconds; Josh Hammerly winning the shot put; Philip Haynes placing fourth in the discus; Mya Green placing first, second and second in the 800, 1600 and 3200 respectively; Kaytie Aanstad finishing third in the shot put; Taylor with another second-place showing in the javelin.

The Scobey girls established 26 personal records in the Whitewater-Saco event while the Scobey boys had 19.

Eleven boys and nine girls of the Spartans qualified for the 37th annual Norm Girard Northeast Montana Top 10 Meet, which was held in Glasgow Tuesday, May 3.

Making the grade for the girls were: Kaytie Aanstad (shot put), Kinsey Anderson (4x100 relay, 4x400 relay), Payton Braut (pole vault), Mandy Furhmann (high jump), Mya Green (3200, 4x400 relay), Mia Handran (200, 400, 300 hurdles, both relays), Karys Lamb (4x100 relay), Carrie Taylor (javelin), Mady Willis (100 and 300 hurdles, both relays).

Competing in Glasgow Tuesday for the Spartans were: Bo Anderson (triple jump); J.P. Braut (pole vault, 4x100 relay); Masen Green (3200); Gage Hallock (100, long jump, 4x100 relay); Josh Hammerly (shot put); Philip Haynes (dis cus); Ty Leischner (triple jump, pole vault); Reagan Machart (400, both relays); Devon Southland (pole vault, 4x400 relay); Cole Taylor (800, 4x400 relay); Zak Traeholt (200, both relays).

Both Scobey teams are scheduled to compete on back-to-back days this week: Friday, May 6, in the Gene Nelson Memorial Meet in Wolf Point starting at 12 p.m.; Saturday, May 7, at the 24th annual Jean Dreikosen Memorial Meet in Glasgow starting at 9 a.m.
