Not long after the Scobey Spartans surpassed the Missoula County Spartans’ 56-year-old 56-game record of the longest winning streak in Montana High School Association boys’ basketball, it came to an end.

Seventy-four hours and 49 minutes to be exact, as the Spartans clinched their 57th consecutive victory at 6:01 p.m. the night of Saturday, December 18, at home against Dodson. They were officially defeated at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, at Lustre Christian as the Lions roared to a 47-33 victory.

The official date on the obituary had the streak being born on Friday, March 8, 2019 at MetraPark Arena in Billings and dying on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 in the Lustre Christian High School gymnasium — 1,018 days! The new all-class state boys’ record of 57 straight wins is survived by an active 51-game home winning streak dating back to February 5, 2016.

Scobey (3-1, 229-147, 57.2-36.7) opens the new year in the Hinsdale High School gymnasium against the North Country Mavericks (0-5, 168-285, 33.657.0) for a conference game on Friday, January 7. The young Mavs have lost to Plentywood (61-38) and Richey-Lambert (70-35) in the Glasgow Showcase Tournament and Fort Benton (46-22) and Winifred-Roy 58-29 in the Lewistown Showcase Tournament. Their last loss was a 50-44 setback to Circle in Saco.

The next day the Spartans host the Class B Glasgow Scotties (2-4, 255-306, 42.551.0). The Scots lost their opener 55-44 to Wolf Point in the Wolves’ Den Gym.

At the Woodin Tournament in Red Lodge they were defeated by the host team 5550 and edged Joliet 41-38. Glendive doubled them 5527, they defeated Sidney 5942 and Malta handled them 61-3...
