Joanne Gilbert 1944 – 2024

Joanne (Brasen) Gilbert was born March 13, 1944 to Francis and Beulah (Ralstin) Brasen in Scobey, MT. She was the youngest of three children and their only girl. After recently celebrating her 80th birthday, she passed away peacefully on the morning of April 21, 2024, from an aortic aneurysm.

As a young girl, Joanne attended Scobey schools and had a wonderful upbringing. She had a lot of fun with her childhood schoolmates, who over time became lifelong friends. She always cherished the friends she collected throughout her life. She graduated from Scobey High School with the class of 1962. Later that same year, on September 22, she married the true love of her life, Bernard (Bernie) Gilbert, from the SHS class of 1960. Over the next several years, they welcomed three sons, Trent, Brian, and Brad to their family. They raised their boys on their farm southeast of Scobey in Line Coulee. Joanne and Bernie also enjoyed shared activities, such as golfing at the Scobey Golf Club, where they were longtime members.

As an adult, Joanne graduated from Minot State University with a degree in Music Education. Following graduation, she taught music in Peerless, Scobey, and Wolf Point. She earned her Master’s degree while teaching in Wolf Point.

Joanne thoroughly enjoyed participating in Scobey’s musical community, with groups such as The Prairie Symphonette, Jack Reiner’s Big Band, and the Dirty Shame Show. Throughout the years, she was a belle, sang songs such as “Big Spender”, and played clarinet in the Dixieland Band. In recent years during Pioneer Days, she played piano in the Saloon, while her brother, Larry, played trumpet.

For many years, Joanne was a joyful member of the Scobey Lutheran Church. She loved singing in the choir. Now with her body fully restored, we know she’s really enjoying being in heaven’s choir. If there’s a praise band, she’s probably in that too.

Joanne loved teaching and encouraging others in music, but she wasn’t just talented at musical things; she was a very creative person. In addition to her musical talents, she was a remarkable painter, did truly amazing things with cross stitch, and crocheted beautiful blankets. Once, she tried knitting Bernie a sweater for Christmas. It came out really wide and way too short, but she gifted it to him anyway so they could laugh at her attempt. That’s a quintessential Joanne story. She had a great sense of humor and never passed up on a moment to laugh.

Everyone who knew Joanne, knew she was lovely, silly, and smart. She could do anything she put her mind to. Our hearts are broken that she is gone from this side of heaven, but we take comfort in knowing we’ll see her again!

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents; brother Don Brasen; and brother-inlaw Howard Corey.

She is survived by Bernie Gilbert, her husband of over 61 years; three sons, Trent (Dorinda) Gilbert, Billings, Brian (Teri) Gilbert, Artesia, NM, and Brad (Kathy) Gilbert, Rapid City, SD; 7 grandchildren, Jessica (Mills) Bale, Ryan (Noelle) Gilbert, Rochelle Gilbert, Jared Gilbert, James Gilbert, Brayden Gilbert, and Carter Gilbert; and 6 great grandchildren, Jayden Gilbert, Clara Bale, Graham Bale, Raiden Gilbert, Athena Gilbert and Lily Bale; brother Larry (Betty) Brasen; sisterin- law, Iris Corey; 4 nieces and nephews – Chaunte’ Kashiwa, Larry Brasen Jr, Jacqueline Corey, and Dale Corey; as well as numerous additional relatives and friends. She truly adored all of you!

Gary Germundson 1938 – 2024

Gary Orlando Germundson went to be with his heavenly father and loved ones on April 25, 2024. Gary started his life on Arbor Ave. in Minot, ND and ended it on Arbor Ave. in Mesa, AZ.

He was born October 22, 1938 to Orly and Helen Germundson in Minot, ND. He was joined by a sister Glenda and a brother Galen. They moved to Ray, ND where he grew up and graduated in 1956.

Gary met the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Olson, at Epping Bible camp as a 7th grader. They saw each other at ball games, Bible camp, and music festivals in Williston throughout their high school years. They started dating in 1956 and were engaged in 1957. Gary served in the US Army from 19571959. He was stationed at Ft Carson, CO and Ft Leonard Wood, MO. They were married July 19, 1959 in Stanley, ND, and made their home in Minot, ND where he attended college at Minot Teachers College and graduated with a B.S. in Education. Glorianne and Kyle were born during this time. He moved to Williston to be a 6th grade teacher at Lewis and Clark school for 4 years. Tonia and Lori completed the family.

During the summers, Gary attended Montana State in Bozeman and received his Master of Administration. In 1967 they moved to Scobey, MT to be the Elementary Principal, a position he held for 25 years. In 1977, he received a Master of Special Education from MSU Bozeman.

In 1992 Gary retired from Scobey Schools. His love of learning found him back at Minot State for a Master of Psychology. For the next 15 years, he worked for Roos Valley Co-Op as a school psychologist. During this time, he spent one day a week at Spotted Bull Treatment Center in Poplar, MT mentoring and changing the lives of many young individuals. In 2010, he retired from the Co-Op, but continued his passion for mentoring young adults. In 2015 he completely retired and they enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona.

Gary was involved in his community by participating in Jaycees, City Council, Lions Club, Color Guard, President of the Lutheran Church, Church Council, Church choir, Gideons, and a mentor for confirmation.

He enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and many countries in Europe, but mostly Norway, because he was Norwegian. He would be very happy to know he was laid to rest on Syttende Mai, Norway’s Independence Day. He enjoyed cruises, the train, and bus tours. He loved yard work, rocks, and making jewelry for his family. He also enjoyed coffee time and talking with his many friends.

Being a foster parent to many children also held a special place in his heart. His special place in Montana was his property at Fort Peck along the Missouri River. His biggest passion was being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Gary is proceeded in death by his parents, brother and wife, Marilyn, his inlaws, and 2 brother in-laws. A granddaughter Samantha, Lori’s special friend Tom, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

From the same author of A Gentleman in Moscow, Amor Towels has released, Table for Two. Towles presents a collection of short stories that are placed in New York, and a novella that takes a character from his first novel, Rules of Civility, and writes about her adventures in 1930’s Hollywood. Every short story catches your interest immediately and leaves you wanting more until you begin the next story, which does the same. While the city is the location for each tale, they all have different plots. Towles’s writing style is fantastic…he is sophisticated, witty, and thought-provoking. He has a knack for quickly sketching in characters and making you really care about how they think or what they will do.

THE EARLY BIRDS apparently can ….

THE EARLY BIRDS apparently can sniff a bargain miles away and know how to act upon it. Such was the case Friday, April 26, with the annual Catholic Rummage Sale in Scobey, which was set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, but was upgraded to Friday at 4 p.m. due to a lot of clothes and treasurers and not enough room for it all. Word of the earlier start spread quickly and at a few minutes after 4 p.m. this was the scene with many folks on the bargain-hunting trail. What wasn’t sold over the weekend was taken down to Wolf Point on a 16-foot trailer for that community to find the bargains. — Leader Photo, mike

Paddlefish Season Opened May 1 On Upper Missouri

This year’s Montana paddlefish season kicked off on May 1 with the opening of the Upper Missouri River section from Fort Benton downstream to Fort Peck Dam. Anglers must have a White Harvest Tag to participate in catching and keeping a paddlefish from this section of the river. These tags are issued through a lottery system. FWP mails these tags to successful applicants.

Unsuccessful paddlefish drawing applicants will be issued a snag-and-release only license for the Upper Missouri River. Others may also purchase snag-and-release tags for this fishery, even if they are not part of the lottery.

The paddlefish season on the Missouri River below Fort Peck Dam and in the Yellowstone River below the mouth of the Bighorn River opens May 15, and the archery fishing season for paddlefish in the Fort Peck Dredge Cuts below Fort Peck Dam opens July 1.

As in the past, anglers may only select one area to fish for paddlefish in Montana: Upper Missouri River (White Harvest Tag), Yellowstone River and Missouri River downstream of Fort Peck Dam (Yellow Harvest Tag) and the Fort Peck Dredge Cut archery-only season (Blue Harvest Tag).

All harvested paddlefish must be immediately tagged and reported within 48 hours. Reporting options include: on-site where fish were harvested (at check points like Intake Fishing Access Site or roving creel staff along the Missouri), on the phone hotline at 1-877-FWP-WILD (877397-9453) or 406-444-0356, or online at MyFWP at fwp. mt.gov.

Teammates Tande And Axtman Battle For First In Scobey Invite

When the regulation 18 holes were complete at the Scobey Invitational, there were still more swings of golf clubs to be swung.

Two to be exact, and Scobey sophomores Cooper Axtman and Evan Tande would be doing the swinging.

Held Monday, April 29, at the Scobey Golf Course, where the temperature was 67 degrees with a little bit of wind in the air as 3 o’clock was approaching, the teammates found themselves in a chip-off to determine who would place first in a field of 27 and who would become the runnersup.

Tande led at the turn with a 2-over-par 38 while Axtman, in addition to Plentywood’s Carson Solberg, had a 39. On the back nine Axtman shot a 38 while Tande, as well as Solberg, carded a 39.

So over to the north side of the No. 9 green the two teammates went for a chipoff— closest to the pin gets the win.

Axtman, most likely swinging a wedge by the way the ball went so high in air, watched his white-dimpled orb plop down on the green carpet and roll a bit on the other side of the pin, coming to a halt around 20 feet past the cup. Tande took his turn and the ball stopped rolling about a dozen feet in front of the cup for the victory.

In addition to those two, also receiving medals were sophomore Brecken Maher with a 42-40—82 for fourth place and Braxton Wolfe carding a 43-42—85 for sixth.

The rest of the Scobey boys finished with these 18hole figures: Carter Lekvold 94; Asher Boze 98; Aydan Stentoft 100, Seth Halverson 110 and Christian Girard 142.

On the girls side of things, Paityn Curtiss fired a fine 39-40-79 to bring back to Plentywood the first-place medal. Combined with Sydney Richardson’s 47-49—96 for second place and Dori Borntrager’s 6053-113 for fifth, the Wild cats placed first in the team standings, outdistancing second-place Scobey by a 46-stroke margin.

Avery Wolfe and Sophia Handran placed third and fourth respectively, both carding 110s, while Claire Lekvold was seventh with a 114, Ashtynn Fladager eighth at 116 and Hadley Maher 10th at 120.

The Scobey kids were in action Monday, April 22, at the Richey-Lambert Invite at the Sidney Country Club but it was shut down due to very strong winds (40-50 mph gusts) as some golfers still had six holes to go.

The next day the Spartans returned to the Sidney 18-hole course for the Fairview Invitational and completed all 18 holes.

Huntley Project was the winner for the boys with a 323 with Scobey in second at 348. Following were Broadus at 370, Plentywood 382, Poplar 383, Froid-Lake 428, Fairview 431, Bainville 507 and Baker 556. Axtman led the Spartans with a 79 followed by Wolfe at 84, Maher 91, Tande 94, and Boze 112.

The final team scores for the girls had Broadus winning with a 382, Plentywood 434, Scobey 457, Savage 457, Bainville 543 and Richey-Lambert 576.

Lekvold led the Lady Spartans with a 105 followed by Wolfe at 113, Handran 117, Fladager 122 and Maher 143.

Scobey will finish the regular season at the Poplar Invitational Thursday, May 2, at the Airport Golf Course east of Wolf Point followed by the Friday, May 3, Plentywood Invite, with both having 10 a.m. tee-off times.

After that it’s back to Sidney for the East C Divisional Meet on Monday, May 6, where the Scobey lads enter the competition as the defending champions after winning it last season in Laurel.

The top 20 individuals and top four teams in Sidney advance to the State Meet in Hamilton May 14-15.
