Are You REAL ID Ready?

May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers mustbeREALIDcompliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.

Great! Wait . . . what’s REAL ID?

Passports are the original REAL ID, first being issued in 1920 at the behest of the League of Nations.Apassport book allows travelers to fly, drive, or float on a boat across the world.

In 2008, the US Department of State started to offer Passport Cards. These much less expensive forms of REAL ID ($30 compared to $110) allow travelers to drive, walk, or float a boat their way into Mexico or Canada from the United States.

With 100 years of experience and 24 million passports issued in 2023 alone, the US Department of State has this process down to a science. Passports for adults last 10 years. You can visit with a local PassportAuthority in the ClerkofCourtsOffice, second floor of the courthouse.

In 2019, the State of Montana decidedtojumponboard and issue their own form of REALID.WithaMontana-issued REAL ID, you can fly domestically, including AlaskaandHawaii. However, you would still have to get a Passport Book or Card if you wanted to go anywhere else.

Do I have to get both a Passport and a Montana REAL ID? No. If you only want to fly domestically and never plan to go to Canada, Mexico (i.e. The Bahamas), or across the big pond, a Montana issued REAL ID might be just the thing for you. Depending on your age, they can last up to 12 years. However, the closer to 70 you are, the shorter the time frame the enhanced driver’s license would be.

But, if you plan to dip your toes off the beach in Tahiti, ski the Alps, or visit your relatives in Norway, you are going to want to get a Passport.

Whatever you do, if you intend to get on a plane or go into Canada, you will need to have this done before May 7, 2025.

NEW LIBRARIAN at the Daniels ….

NEW LIBRARIAN at the Daniels County Free Library is Arlene Kegley at right. Outgoing librarian Val Landeraaen at left began Arlene’s training on May 6th. Arlene has worked in other jobs for the county the past three years, most recently as the Deputy Clerk of Court. As an avid reader, she’ll fit right in and be happy to assist.

Val has been at the library for the past six years. She and husband Pastor Paul Landeraaen have lived in Scobey 27 years, raised their family here and served the Scobey and Peerless Lutheran Churches. Pastor Paul is retiring, she says she’s not quite ready to retire but chose her husband over the library as they plan to start a new chapter in Seal Rock, Oregon. They will be leaving the area in early June. A farewell potluck is planned for June 2 at 11:30 a.m. at the Scobey Lutheran Church.

We have a very good and active library for children and adults alike. Check out the weekly column “Library Notes.” Stop in and welcome Arlene and bid farewell to Val. —Leader Photo b
