IT WON’T BE LONG BEFORE ….

IT WON’T BE LONG BEFORE THE NEW FACE of this building on the north end of Pioneer Town is complete, just like the one two doors down to the south. Ross Tuggle of Scobey started the project a few weeks ago and also did the one on the left side of the photo. Major kudos to the Daniels County Museum Association and other volunteers for the many improvements that have taken and are currently taking place on the western outskirts of Scobey — the place has never looked better!

Change Of Venue, Judge and Atty In Leischner Case

Judge Kaydee Snipes-Ruiz of Havre, District 12, last month, accepted the invitation to preside and assume jurisdiction on the State vs.

Jenn Leischner case.

Jennifer Leischner of Scobey is charged with 111 felony offenses of theft, deceptive practices, and money laundering, defrauding Nemont Telephone Cooperative while employed there from 2014 to 2020.

Fifteenth Judicial District Judge David Cybulski had filed the request for a new judge last March. As an observation, Judge Cybulski is not seeking reelection this year and potentially the case could continue beyond his term as judge.

The case is still filed in the Fifteenth Judicial District but any trial or subsequent hearings will be conducted in Havre.

Terry Toavs’ request to withdrawastheattorneyofrecord representing Leischner, was approved April 17th. At a hearing in Havre on that day, Leischner requested representation through the Office of the Public Defender. Her request was granted and a public defender will be appointed.

Attorney for the State is Daniels County Attorney Logan Olson.

The May 15 status hearing has been vacated. An omnibus memorandum must be filed with the court before May 31. The memorandum primarily is an agreement between attorneys stating all parties have the information needed to set the stage for forthcoming proceedings.

51% In County Get Absentee Ballots

Absentee ballots will be in the mail Friday, May 10. In DanielsCountyapproximately 51% of active voters have requested absentee ballots and will be receiving them in the mail shortly. There are 916 active voters (voted in the last general election) and 174 inactive voters (registered but did not vote in the last two election years).

Electors may want to check their voter registration status at the Clerk and Recorder’s office.

Late registration began May 7 for new registrations and for those needing to update their status.

With several ballot issues and local three Daniels County contests voter turnout is expected to be high in this primary election.

This is an especially important primary particularly in Daniels County. All the local ballot issues will be decided in the primary. Likely the offices of Sheriff, Clerk of District Court and County Commissioner will be decided as well in the primary because all of the candidates are Republican. The candidates for State Representative in HD29 and State Senate District 15 are also all Republicans.Without Democrat representation in any of these races, one of the two Republicans in each race will advance uncontested to the general election.

Commissioners Sign Several Agreements

Some of the highlights at Monday’s regular Daniels County Commissioners meeting include signing contracts for procurement and notice to proceed with the Coal Creek Bridge build out north of Peerless. A $210,500 contract was signed for a steel bridge superstructure with Contech Engineering Solutions in Ohio. Other segments are still in the bidding stages, such as underlying structure. Hopes are to see some action on that in June. A contract for a $1,671 asbestos check, before demolition of the old bridge, was also signed.

An agreement to lease space at the County owned tower site northwest of Flaxville to MDU was signed for $800 month. MDU will erect an 82’ tower and small building for its radio system.

Commissioners signed an agreement with Sheridan County where they would accept Daniels County household waste in its landfill at $70 ton, after the new loading station is completed near the landfill here.

A RURAL FIRE CALL SUNDAY ….

A RURAL FIRE CALL SUNDAY AFTERNOON shortly after 4 p.m. May 5, put the Scobey-based Daniels County Fire Department in action. Bubby Danelson and his daughter, Teresa, were out for a drive and spotted smoke exiting a grove of trees at the Kenny and Jodi Benson place approximately seven miles south of Scobey. They called it in and the rural fire department responded. With a southeast wind moving along at a pretty good pace at that time, the cause might have been a power line rubbing against a tree branch and from there it began spreading in a large grove of trees and thick brush, fueled by the strong wind. Nicholas Holum, pictured left, and Cole Holum were in the first fire truck on the scene and are shown knocking down the hot spots. If the Danelsons hadn’t spotted the smoke and called it in at the time they did, this could have been a major disaster because the location of the Benson’s house and the direction of the wind could have possibly reduced it to an ash pile of rubble. This county community is so fortunate to have dedicated firefighters! — Leader Photo, mike
